Love Poem: What Might Have Been

What Might Have Been

I know I could have loved you
if you hadn’t been so young.
I was older by some years, more than a few.
I haven’t thought about those days
for quite a long, long, while.
Today I’m wondering if you ever do.

We each went on with others
and I’ve had a happy life.
I hope your love was everything you needed.
Now we’re right back where we started
as we’ve each been left alone
and the distance once between us has receded.

The rules we lived by in those days
no longer seem to matter.
No law says that the man must be the older.
We have reached the age of reason.
We can do just as we please.
And my head would lie so nicely on your shoulder.
