To Love a Child

To Love A Child

Today the stars fell from the sky
To settle on the ground.
The stars were damp now where they lie:
With each, a tear was found.

But what could cause the stars on high
To feel such fearful pain?
And why did every tear they'd cry
End up as tearful rain?

Then one sad day a child was found
Whose sadness would not end.
While all her tears that touched the ground
Would find a star to send.

Such stars were weeping with the child,
As clouds and winds and nature wild
Would bring the world a newfound joy;
For every crying girl or boy.

The sages grew as fearful, too,
As all the people near.
For all the happiness that grew
Was from a single tear.

An angel or a fairy queen?
Who was this magic child?
For everywhere that she has been
Another young one smiled.

And then the stars were whisked away;
They flew back to the sky.
Now, each time that no joy holds sway,
The stars begin to cry.

So worried were the world's old,
They made a promise pure and bold:
That when a child's tears now flowed,
They fed and kept them from the cold.

Then once all children, safe and sound
Were let to sleep on hallowed ground,
The stars and moon and Heaven's light
Would keep them safe through darkest night.

The stars above have since grown older;
Promises were kept.
The nights have ceased from growing colder
While the children slept.

Such lessons learned from being kind
To little children, one would find,
Would spread the message to each mind
That for our children, love is blind.
