Love Poem: Time Soon Comes

Time Soon Comes

Mavis swept the kitchen floor
in the dark of ev'ning light,
Stopped to fold a cigarette
near the corner, out of sight.
Recalled words upon a stone
     she'd read many times before,
Said something about a man
who'd lost his life in the war.

Never warmed to the echoes
of all the years left alone,
Ignored the fact he had loved
     another one he called Joan.
Moonlight captured drifting smoke
just before she went to sleep,
Somewhere through a darkened night
a lonely soul starts to weep.

He looks down from a soft cloud
that he travels on through time,
Something has long changed his view
of the days left far behind.
Sees her working through the year
and moving from street to street,
Still he lives in silence sworn
'bout the day on which they'll meet.

She lay down in bed one night,
     felt a weariness of life,
Loneliness cut through her heart
     like an ancient lover's knife.
Tears began to tumble down
from a single cloud on high,
Lightly landing on the cheek
and rolling soft by and by.

Starlight carried angel's song
     about two that became one
On a night destined by time,
through the days not yet begun.
She gave away working hard,
     passed her soul beyond remand,
Closed her eyes in the sweet light
and felt the touch of his hand.
