Love Poem: The One That Got Away

The One That Got Away

Eyes mist in memories of your magical smile.
Did you forget me, I wonder?
Would we have been friends if nothing else?
Lost in time, I search the sky and see your face
in clouds, hear your voice in soft rain showers.
Our laughter still hangs on warm breezes
of summer like a sentimental love song so long ago.
Holding my hand, you bathed me in your glow.
The afternoon sun dimmed in the light of you.
One kiss sent me spinning in your orbit,
and my world collided with yours.
Like a stone sinking to your ocean floor,
                       I never wanted to surface.
We spent every waking moment together –
one breath, one voice, one path, one love.
Our youthful dream was a fantasy,
one I never wanted to awaken from,
although many tried to shake me from its grip.
Eternally, I would have climbed to your mountaintop
to entwine myself in the soulful essence
                              of your earth and sky.
If only you had stayed, I may have loosened
our threads to find my own breath,
or more likely, I would have held my breath longer
just to be another note in your melody.
We will never know now what might have been then.
You changed our destiny,
                    my light source,
                       and my trajectory.
We thought our love was written in the starlight
of our days and nights -
always present, always true, always leading us to each other.
Now, I am married to another,
                      but I often wonder…
