Love Poem: Invitation of the Night

Invitation of the Night

I thought I would resist the night
Heeding an old poet's reason
But after the terror of light
Resisting love would be treason

The light that make leaves green
Bring them to fake gold with soft lies
Shew me time and yet weaves the screen
Of eternity for my eyes

Its day's labor drains all my strength
And flock me drooping to my rest
By its sun's laws my love is spent
The skin wrinkles from its caress

And I have drained my world to keep
Its fire fuming so I produce
Vanities that deters my sleep
When these chains would be broken loose

The night is balm for all life's pain
In its calm hope I close the door
Silence the rattle of the chain
And know Love's peace forevermore.
