Implicit Memories

That regretful half-cracked smile,
That "Guess I'll see you in a while ..."
The way you tip your hat and nod your head,
Conveys all the things we left unsaid.
And just like that your at the door.
My eyes stay focused on the floor.
The hopeful look upon your face
Turns resolute when I don't give chase.
And then you're gone and I'm alone.
Escaping time whilst on my phone.
So I light a cigarette,
And shed what tears that I dare let.
From painful thoughts the mind protects.
But still my heart forever recollects.
