Love Poem: If It Hadn't Been For You

If It Hadn't Been For You

We stayed out late at night: back then;
In the warmer months of the season
We would go down to the lake for fun.

If it hadn't been for you:

We took along some music to listen to;
We would go out on the pier
We were looking up into the sky: at the moon.

If it hadn't been:

Then our eyes caught each other:
As I looked into her eyes
Those intoxicating green eyes, she had
If it hadn't been for her:

You looked right past our gaze;
When you wanted to go
Filtering through my deep soul.

But, I realized I had to make you see;

Just how deep down you mean to me;
And, with my guard let down
For a love that I thought would last: it did.

You have gotten past my wall:
Somehow
I knew I wanted and needed; more of you
I needed you to have it all; with you
You're my sugar, my honeydew.

I wanted you to see,

Now that you've had the chance to see;
It all was true; it had to be
It's always been about you; my only you
My lover: my best friend
I needed her to see;

But that was so many years ago;
It might even be a blur to me
If it hadn't been: for her, you see.

But if it hadn't been for her;
Coming by to check on me; too, see
That I was still this mess inside
If it hadn't been:

Then she walked across the room:
I find myself still yearning; for more of you
Thoughts of us; rushed through my mind.

If it hadn't been for her:
My lover, such a good time
We had over the years–oh yeah
But I'm still lost; without you here.

Now, I find myself blue:
Without you, I sure do miss you
These tears; want to—fall.

R.I.P., Shannon, I love you!
