Endings and Beginnings

This June through August romance must succumb
to time. Each feels the silence closing in.
They know the end is coming, yet feel numb.
They dread relinquishing what might have been.

A thousand miles apart, they reminisce.
Although they’d vowed to keep in touch, they know
long-distance romance seldom ends in bliss;
and time, as well as distance, is a foe.

Beyond the silence of summer’s end
loom pleasures and demands of freshman year.
At college two young hearts begin to mend,
as to their chosen pathways they adhere.

A few years pass. Again, it’s summertime.
As autumn beckons, two who parted ways
as teens just married. They find life sublime.
They beat the odds and bask in love’s warm rays.
