Different or the Same

Ever since the days when the world was still young,
The same stories were told, the same songs were sung.
Through the constant tide of birth, marriage, and death,
We each seek our place, ‘til our very last breath.
We cry the same tears, for the same sad reasons.
We share the same triumphs throughout the seasons,
Each one of us born, who must play in this game,
Every woman, child, and man, just the same.

Yet, each of us is like no one in history,
Our distinctness among billions a mystery,
Like snowflakes and fingerprints and stars and faces
We see only once, and in no other places.
We each have our own voice and way of talking,
Our own personalities and way of walking.
From the way that we look to the way that we speak,
Each of us is entirely, sublimely, unique.

First time he saw her - it was like a lightning strike.
The world almost stopped - he nearly fell off his bike.
In two blinks of her eyes, his heart grew two wings.
Her voice was melodious like a bird’s who sings.
His heart was captive, though he’d committed no crime.
He’d never seen one like her in a whole lifetime.
My two favorite things about people, I can name:
They are all different and they are all the same.
