Love Poem: All the Way

All the Way

I met her just after she finished at school,
I’m not by nature a silly old fool,
But It’s now been forty years since then,
So I need to write down how, feel with a pen,
I love her now more than ever I guess,
And I know that without her I’d be in a mess,

The years have gone by, looking forward to spending,
growing old together, in bliss never ending,
We've always been there looking after each other,
She nags me of course, But more like a mother,
Who tells her child off because, she wants him to be,
Like the man she once knew, that used to be me:

And now I arrive at the end of this missive,
And, I don't mean to sound as if I'm dismissive,
But no one knows how strongly she copes
With this illness I have which has dashed all our hopes,
Now please understand this is not a sad letter,
We still love each other and mucking together,
Will fill every day with as much as we dare,
And never take lightly 'the love that's still there.(we share)
