The Wily Thorn

The wily thorn that signifies the rose
abides; some hapless fool will come along
untutored in the art of willful pose
to grasp, and sustain a sharp reminder!

His gift bestowed and modestly attended,
there stirs a trembling only she may know
whose pledge is true and joyfully intended,
first semblance of a passion soon to grow.

How powerful beauty's lure can be!
it supersedes, and pricks the heart to bleed,
and captured in its snare they're led
on rapture's path, where'er that path may lead.

Mother

It was a feeling unlike any I had known before—
Mother tucking me into bed when I was three or four.
She’d kiss me on the cheek and quietly close the door.
`Ere sleep stole me, I knew no one could be loved more.

Mother’s arms were my world—soft, sweet, secure.
Her voice was gentle; it told me angels were for real.
She carried me with a tight clasp, my safety to ensure.
And when it was bedtime, beside my crib she’d kneel.

Nothing is endowed with power like maternal love.
It supersedes all the evils mortality can enact.
Its supremacy was crafted by He who is above.
Thank God my faithful Mother knew that as fact.

Trophy Love

Broken hearts don't often mend after first loves are gone. They simply hang around sitting on a throne, wearing a crown called "trophy love". Love comes and goes but first loves linger on until the end of time, unless another love as strong as the first supersedes the number one spot.

Daughter (Acrostic)

Dainty at birth; still quite the same
Admiring life’s wonders; seeking your fame
Unique in your ways; each and every one
Gentle little voices; as warm as the sun
Heartfelt glances, mom is under your spell
Tender constant touches; knowing you’ll do well
Emotional and moody; my girls are all of this
Rarity supersedes the shade with an award of eternal bliss

Trophy Love

Broken hearts
don’t often mend
after first loves are gone.
They simply hang around
sitting on a throne
wearing a crown
called “trophy love”.
Love comes and goes
but first loves
lingers on until the end of time
unless, of course, another love
as strong as the first
supersedes the number one spot.
