Winnie: a Dog's Life

I was just laid off after twenty years;
Put out to pasture and facing my fears.
I didn't need another mouth to feed
But something about her stirred a need.

She was an old girl from a broken home;
Nowhere to sleep, nowhere to roam.
Her mom and dad had parted ways.
Was this the end of happy days?

She needed me; I needed her.
Life had changed the way things were.
We both grew in each other's love;
Two souls that fit just like a glove.

Her name was Winnie as in Pooh.
Although our years together were few,
She came along in the nick of time.
Together we conquered those hills to climb.

Two old girls starting anew.
I saved her but she saved me too.
