Love Poem: Why

Why

Why

Why must I cling to summer’s long past,
And seasons that only fall further behind,
Lost forever in some dark and misty swirl,
Swept away, like a million hazy yesterdays.

Why keep alive a long and worn out shadow,
Or some aged vision of a warm welcome ocean,
Or some far off, fiery orange and pink sunrise,
And why seek a time of such youthful dreams.

Why look up and gaze into a deep black night
And turn time backwards against the cosmos,
Seeing life’s reruns in each dotted bright star,
And some youthful face in the night’s full moon.

Why reminisce on memories long ago buried,
Memories only kept alive in my ancient heart,
A place now for the dead, and innocent dreams.
A place far away from the moon’s youthful face.

Why do answers lie in love’s timeless vagaries,
Why does love make all things old, new again,
And why does it peel the layers from your heart.
Over and over as if it can be born new each time.

Why does love make a blue ocean warm again,
And make dreams found again in your breast,
Why does love always cast sunrise in new light,
And make magic sunsets illuminate a dusk sky.

And why does love leave brilliant twinkling stars
Shining down and offering a solemn promise to live,
To live now, in this day and to live now in this night,
And to live all of our time, in love’s plentiful bounty.
