Love Poem: When Lover's Quarrel

When Lover's Quarrel

Arguments move like a rushing tide
pressing forward over the sand
where nothing stays
when it pulls back in retreat
swallowed by the ocean of our lives

It's there the heart is wounded
fighting for each breath, to survive
Where time, now a memory
came and went
When voices were loud
without care or reflection
nor concern for value or response

To win
and stay defiant with pride
as love tries to keep from drowning
in a sea of reason, each tries to exploit
using emotion as a tip of a spear
thrust into the heart, to wound
with utter madness for a triumph that does't exist
when lover's quarrel over nothing of importance
but, the realization that love has already glided away
on the winds of apathy
Leaving only screams from failure
that echo in the heart's chamber
where shadows hide in despair
retreating like the tide
with nothing left, but two wounded hearts
trembling in the lonely cold before night falls
