Love Poem: What Is This?

What Is This?

Some couples stroll round hand-in-hand
Just like we did so long ago,
Yet still I cannot understand
The fine line between friend and foe...

Sometimes the nights were so divine
We never wanted them to end,
And so you stayed for days at a time,
Never thinking you were more than a friend,

But then, all those times when we clashed,
The things we put each other through,
Our contact severed, our friendship slashed,
Yet somehow I patched things up with you,

And so it goes on, year in, year out,
You've never kept a friend for longer,
And bizarrely, there is no doubt
The fights have made our friendship stronger,

You come to me to condemn him,
Asking me to be your 'bit on the side',
And though it's wrong and kind of dim,
I'll always let you take me on a ride,

So how can you say that there's nothing in it,
When people ask about you and I?
It's true that I don't expect you to commit,
But nothing can hurt me more than when you lie,

We can shout and fall out every now and again,
But we always wind up entwined devotedly,
And if our friends find out our hideaway then
They just smirk and say "You guys made up speedily..."

So what does it mean, all this fighting and pain?
Mixed in with a love so breathless and discreet,
Will we each walk away from our life with disdain?
Or once and for all in our sweet madness meet...
