Want Vs Need
Last Christmas little Anne dashed to the tree.
The gift she most desired, would she see?
Her folks were poor, but Santa’s not!
The coat she got—she NEEDED,
but Santa’d not heeded
her one-plea letter
for the better
present, a
little
doll--
one
that drinks,
wets, and cries
“MAMA!” Anne thinks
When will this grand prize
be mine, as I have planned?
while she SAYS, “I love my coat.”
She’s just too young to understand
why some get a coat; some, a sail boat;
others, a sweet doll on which they can dote.
