Love Poem: Too Comfortable

Too Comfortable

Regrets pile up like blown paper
against a fence on some abandoned
building site that has a sign "Keep Out".
Questions are asked why
the structure never went ahead,
why it barely made it past a hole
in the ground or climbed no higher
than a course or two of bricks.

So many dreams
end this way, starved of effort
or courage or belief. Often the seeds
are sown when drawing up the plan,
seen magnificent in someone's mind,
there to stay, too comfortable
protected in its conceptual womb,
never really wanting to be born
and risk everything on that first
taken breath, much like
a frightened self facing love.
