The Word

How I sit in solitude
In solitude I'm thinking o'er
Twas not so very long ago

Not so very long ago
When every morning sun was new
And evenings earned with family
I think I can remember how
The warm expressions and the voices
Blended certain harmony

Not so very long ago
When future's hope a certainty
And one lived with some security
I think I can remember now
Love being spiritual condition
Other love but some four-letter word

Not so very long ago
When you and I must say goodby
Fond memories stored mild and sure
I think I can remember now
No need to say the searching word
Our love was deep and understood

And now I yearn for long ago
The simple word's become command
From paranoid to paranoid
"Love you" the word with anxious face
"Love you too" the must return
Love a desperate word

How I sit in solitude
In solitude I'm thinking o'er
Twas not so very long ago
