Love Poem: The Velvet Blanket

The Velvet Blanket

I turned my head in heartache, i refused to view,
my heart could not endure going into that room,
i forced myself to see, my eyes could not erase,
all the laughter, love, and smiles i once saw upon your face,
and in that moment, i knew, if i had gone back to see,
i would not have the strength in my heart to survive for your son and me,
i sacrificed seeing the pain to make sure our son remained strong,
i covered his heart with the beautiful memories of your life for him to move on,
i held our baby when he struggled, and wiped the tears from his face,
and replaced the hurt with the laughter of all the funny things you would say,
and when he became a man, and started a family of his own,
i watched him give with all his heart all the love that we had shown,
and when he packed his bags and left home, i sat in my room and cried,
the love i hold inside of me...i will protect him with my life.
