Love Poem: The Night's Sands

The Night's Sands

the evening's breeze moved the curtains slowly
this motion to the world was one of compliance
behind them hid the full moon rising
with its scattering light,
like a flock of birds frightened by thunder

on the table, a candle, its smoke moving upward,
after being snuffed out
with wax still soft and warm
an empty glass sits in front of you,
your fingers motionless on its thin stem
all this, cradled in my mind,
as I reach from my chair for your hand
in the still young night
as we had a date with the ocean sand
where we will leave footprints,
filled in by the dark water of the night,
as each wave merges with the tiny granules
leaving only two sets of prints at the high water mark,
facing each other
