The Last Christmas Card

Christmas Eve two thousand and eight
Such a terrible year for my darling
For the cancer had spread
Terminal they said
Just two days left
We were both bereft

For forty one years we exchanged Christmas cards
Expressing our love and devotion
But my very last card from you my love
Full of forty one years of deep love and emotion
I bring out your card when the season begins
I treasure your words and hold them within

The tenth anniversary of your passing nears
How did I get through it; there were so many tears
How did I survive without you by my side
We thought we had forever, but then you died
But reading your message upon my card
Brings you back for a moment, even though it’s still hard

Whilst reading the last words that you ever wrote
As I read them again a lump comes to my throat
For I know they were written by your own precious hand
Coming straight from your heart, into my heart they land
