Love Poem: The Journey

The Journey

Coming from the city
when I first saw the desert,
miles and miles into emptiness,
while fearful of the mishap--
a blown tire or busted axle--
the isolation spoke to me,
a strange familiarity reminded
me of why I had just got up
and left…

I guess, I never felt full
though growing up in a city
of endless abundance—remained
a hunger in me that a deluge
of fine food and riotous entertainment
could only temporarily ease,
speed slowing in my mind
to gnawing repetition…

I have found that things
are just things
when in rapid motion--
and a heart needs time
and space to first learn
its own aloneness, before
it can ever be truly filled
by someone else or something
of greater, far more satisfying
value….
