That Friend

I am surrounded by people... yet I am lonely. I am encircled by friends and yet the loneliness escapes me not. I cling to the faint fantasy that I can trust my friends, that I can tell them anything... but I know that isn't true. Oh! how I long to tell one person, one special person, all about me... what I've been through... what others mean to me... but that friend eludes me. He eludes me like a mouse hides from a cat. He wears the stealth of the night as his black cloak of invisibility. He rides in and out of my life on his steed called Wind and he never stops to say "Hello" or "Goodbye". Sometimes when a gentle breeze catches in the trees and the leaves hail your arrival, I sit and wait for you... longing for you to blow by. But you never do. You come when I least expect it and you leave when you're most needed. Where do you go.? From whence did you come.? Why not stay with me and keep me company. My friend... my only friend... my only friend... please... don't forsake me once again.
