Thankful Now

Laying on my back in this grassy knoll
Appreciating the sky and its splendor
The smells of the flowers, as birds then fly
Give thoughts to my mind, newly rendered

It was here that we met some time ago
A day much like today, it was sunny, bright
I said, “how do you do, May I sit a spell?”
You said, “Yes, but please don’t block my light.”

The book you were reading, I cannot remember
But your nose stayed in there, just for a bit
Your attention was desired, I applied all I had
Until you gave in and succumbed to my whit

I told you a joke, you pretended to laugh
The cutest of laughs I had ever really heard
It compared to a child’s, so lively and free
I saw your personality without even a word

We talked on for hours, lost track of the time
It seems that we hit it off from the very start
T’was so much in common, even friends we had
That at that moment we exchanged our hearts

Now, today as I lay here remembering then
While I wait for you, for our date, to arrive
I smile as I see the true beauty of things
I’m thankful for your making me feel so alive
