Love Poem: still the one -

still the one -

I watch you both as years wind on
foreseeing one day you'll be gone

your failing bodies groan their tale
of passing time, and growing frail

and yet, the worst of ageing's signs
are those that fog your brilliant minds

for you gave yours at my behest
to make my life so full and blessed

and now the memories disappear
     as you leave slowly, year-by-year

I see the precious moments drain
now lost for good, like tears in rain

but still, your love is clear and wise
each time you find each others' eyes

I know then, when I see that spark
your love will shine through any dark

amidst the joy, and yes, some tears
     soulmates now, some seventy years

there's no gift greater, man or wife
than sharing all the dreams of life

to have a love that's next-to-none
right there beside you, still the one

so, please don't fret the bills and aches
I'm here to do whate'er it takes

you gave your all to see me through
and now, I'll give my all for YOU

so, as you did when I was born
(and Gabriel blows his final horn)

I'll take you in my arms to keep ...
and rock you ... 'til you're fast asleep.

* For my mom & dad, married seventy years, and still in love as ever ... you are the definition of true love and commitment. *
