Stained Glass Insecurities

I thought I saw the butterflies inked on your skin
Flying away
Your vial of tears was spilled out on your journal page
I couldn't see the words of the letter that you wrote
But I'm sure it was filled with nothing but love
You had the biggest heart of anyone I ever knew
I'm sure your chest always hurt from the heart you were forced to hold
And your brain must've succumbed to all the secrets you were told
And in your memory,
Butterflies are inked on my skin
But they could never redeem the heart you were forced to hold

The feather on your ink pen
Came from the crow you attached your messages to
And the paper you write your darkest confessions on
Came from the cloth from the flags of the kingdom you once ruled
It wasn't your choice to leave,
But you always left these gates glowing
Despite every hit that left you bruised
And you should know, we still chant your name all the damn time
Long live your charm
And your darling reputation here
This is our kingdom come
This is your kingdom come
And you know we'll always defend you
Even if you choose to run

Attaching messages to birds
Wondering how they defend with such fringed and enfeebled shields
Passing like ships in the night
But we could never seem to tell
What were calm waters
And what was a battlefield
Sailing away into your kingdom come
This is our kingdom come
But you know we'll always choose to defend you
Even if you choose to run

And this might be your kingdom come
But the torches will always be burning,
The gates will always be open,
And we’ll always choose to support you
Even when you choose to run
