Love Poem: Space

Space

I never thought I’d be writing this;
never thought I’d be sinking fast
in this quicksand where the only branch to grasp
hangs from the tree of past thoughts of you and I.

There was a time when I thought that time
might never start up again;
that time was dictated by you and I,
and if I never lost sight of your crystal eyes,
I’d never feel anything but
complete again.

Those seemingly endless moments;
whispered promises of preservation,
and soft kisses on the cheek.

I never thought there would be a time
when my words no longer calmed your sometimes
restless seas;
all I had to do was tell you it would be fine,
and simply put,
that was fine enough.

I never thought we'd be strangers;
that we'd be able to say each other's name without feeling like Christmas morning all over
that our love could become a mere fossil trapped beneath unjustified separation.
I never thought I’d lose that last piece to my puzzle,
and I don’t think I’ll rest until I find it again.

I never thought that you and I would become what we have today;
bound by the past,
divided by space.
