Sonnet 46 'Love's Overspoken, I Will Make Another Farewell'

'Love’s' overspoken! I will make another
Farewell! Yet only Love can brave an end!
You were what can’t be found in any other
You were that on which all right things depend,
On which, hope waits! And, with great care you turned
The leaves of my all-spotted, scribbled Book,
All traces of my self-pity, you burned,
You gave me fire and mercy in one look…
Each soul you met said all his days were poorer,
Had you not matched his steps, with yours and listened
And smiled as though your joy was made the purer --
For your bright Presence every poor soul, christened!
For every grace you shaped, light in your talk
You left me, Love, your footprints in the chalk.
