Solitude

She lingered by the garden gate to see if Tom would walk on by. To her, it seemed, it was her fate to yearn so much, it made her cry. A glimpse would have her overjoyed. He always set her heart astir. Her mother would be so annoyed to know how much he meant to her. She stared at pages in her book to no avail but, come what may, with every step, she’d steal a look to see if Tom was on his way. She looked again, just as before, then tarried by a flowering shrub and thought she’d wait - a little more. But Tom, meanwhile, was in the pub! ~
