So Hot We Sizzled

We were in love like no other couple has ever been.
So hot together, we sizzled when we hit the bed.
You would think we were bacon in a skillet.
Turning on the fire would have been redundant.

We could not keep our hands off each other
Until the little things began creeping in
Reminding us of the mundaneness of life
Laundry, cooking, cleaning, paying bills, working.

Ugh! Damn it! We were perfect the first few days.
Maybe even a week. Then life began to interfere.
Relatives came to visit, outstaying their welcome.
Come on Aunt Edna. You have a home somewhere!

We stopped calling each other “Honey” and “Sweetie”
seconds after she arrived with her criticizing ways.
She was the one, I always think when I look back on it.
We were thoroughly in love until Aunt Edna’s arrival.

He says it was my whining ways around Aunt Edna
That convinced him maybe I was not the woman of his dreams.
These days we are living with other people. We do not smile or wave.
We ignore each other, both probably knowing it was Aunt Edna.
