So Few Make the Transition

Many will cross continents,
Many will cross oceans,
All for a so-called better life,
In places where they have been told,
Life is not cold.

Many will carry the future of their family,
Many will carry a promise in blood from their family,
All for a so called better life,
In places, they have been told,
The streets are lined with gold.

Many will take with them things better left behind,
Like guilt, that only brings sadness to mind,
To places, they have been told
Have no poor people to behold.

Few will take the one thing, they should never leave behind,
That is essential should they ever get in a bind,
If they want a so-called better life,
In a place they have been told,
You will get by if you care to be bold.

Yet for most it will be a mistake,
To forget the one thing they should take
If they want a so-called better life,
In a place, they should have been told,
That life will always be cold,
In a place that glitters but is not made of gold,
And there are sights to behold,
That makes it hard to feel bold,
If you are not carrying a warm heart.

Some will be fortunate to arrive with a heart that is warm,
Others will return home and retrieve their heart while it is still warm,
But most will be in too much of a rush for a better life,
In place they were not meant to behold,
If they want to stay out of the cold and grow old.
