Love Poem: Sleepy Girl

Sleepy Girl

Late in the night as I watch you sleep,
I wonder what dreams in your head do you see.
I know if I ask your silence you’ll keep,
But I can’t help but wonder, what could they be?

I hope for the best,
Dreams of god fortunes to come.
Or maybe a test,
Successfully done.

Nothing but angels and rainbows for you,
And sweet treats or happiness everywhere you look.
But I know sometimes bad dreams are waiting for you.
Or dreams about things you read in a book.

As I look down I see innocence there,
And a carefree expression,
Only sleep can put there.
For a moment we can share that expression.

When you have a bad dream for now I will be there.
A strong, safe presence to sooth your despair.
But soon you’ll grow up and a gown you will wear,
And I’ll know that bond with someone else you will share.

When that day comes I will cry just a bit,
And sit in your old room by myself for a while.
I’ll look at the bed with a worn down pit,
And the stuffed bears you left lying in a pile.

Slowly I’ll stand and walk out of the door,
Stop in the hall, and turn to look a little more.
There in the middle of the floor,
Is the spot where I stood and listened to you snore.

But for now you’re still here and a little girl,
You still need your daddy for just a bit more.
So I’ll leave you to sleep, my little pearl.
As silently I close your door.

Good Night.
