She Was Only 14

On this blessed Mother's Day morn, there came to me a most pleasant and glorious memory. It was ever so precious and appropriately timely.

It took me back to the winter of 1984 in the city of San Francisco. It was the day that I was installed to be the new pastor of a small church. I was just a young man of 35. But that was not the memory that set my heart aflame.
As I begin to write this, I am fighting back the tears that are forcing one pause and then another.

By the end of the worship service, I found myself at the altar counseling and praying with a young lady. She had responded to an invitation to give her life to Christ. But there was also something else going on inside of her.
She was pregnant at the age of 14, and her mother was insisting that she get an abortion. She was facing the greatest dilemma of her young life. Without any coaching on our part, she had concluded that she wanted to give birth to her child. We stood with her and supported her in her decision.

By 1984, millions of babies had been legally aborted and many million more would follow; but not this one. 33 years ago, a 14 year old became a mother; we helped to save a baby from abortion, and I will never forget them.

Early this morning on Mother's Day, they came to mind, and I said a prayer for them. I sure wish that I could see that young lady and her child again. I would wish them a Happy Mother's Day and give them the biggest hug and an embrace most divine.
