Sexual Misgivings

Sexual Misgivings

There is this instinctive desire
To fulfill one’s sexual craving;
Programmed into the human psychic,
Just like the beating of the heart
Which, after millions of years of evolution,
Resists the surgeon’s prerequisite
To stop it before operating.

One would assume that rest would be welcomed
But instead, the heart rejects this procedure.
The pulse once activated must never stop
And beats faster with sexual readiness
To ensure survival of the species.
How simple and yet complex
The concept of love’s role
Is acted upon DNA’s spiral ladder
Of emotional trickery
With physical gratification.

The act itself is aesthetically unattractive,
Awkward, and a passage whereby
Bacteria and viruses
Can breach the body’s
Defense mechanisms.
Still, over and again, the gambit is thrown
(Using pills, devices, and genetics,
Evolutionary and scientifically employed)
In the belief, that pathosis will be thwarted.
The pleasure is worth the risk.
