Purity

(for CFD, 1944–2023)

Something blinked inside my soul
I used to be half but now I’m whole
To me, the diamond ring is coal –
That’s purity of thought

A bend in the river, a chill in the night
A martial plan to coerce right –
All these things that will the fight
Will one day already be fought

‘Cause I want love
And I want security
But if couldn’t have another thing,
Baby, give me purity

Prometheus and Christ were pure
Over pain’s cliffs and hills, they endured
If a river is cloudy, you can’t be sure
Anything will ever be caught

Yes I want love
And I’ll take security
But if I could only have one thing,
Baby, let it be purity

And now my father is in the urn
The things he taught, I’ve tried to learn
While deep in me, a molten memory burns
Where purity’s steel is wrought

‘Cause he showed love
Resisted security
And spoke to me about the ultimate path
That’ll lead me straight to purity

He led me straight to purity.
