Pains of a Lost Hero

Hard battles fought all lost and won,
Coming home with no wife and son,
He gained titles, land, and honors,
But he still clearly remembers war's horrors.

The blood he spilled in battle tasted bitter,
Killing off men who were ten years younger,
He survived what other men would have not,
Resulting in his soul to slowly rot.

It was a fair maiden that was behind it all,
He acted as her unbroken shield that would not fall,
But coming home to the Land that nourished him,
He could not find her as she left on a whim.

He sought the girl restlessly for a day
And wondered why she would just go away,
The search was for naught however,
As his wounds open and he gets a fever.

Nursed back to life by a young lady,
A lady who's name 's Mary,
She had a beautiful glow on her eyes,
And she was known to be very wise.

He opens his eyes and sees the fair maiden,
An embrace refused as she's already taken,
Married to a noble man down South she says,
Teary-eyed the man questions if she jests.

Mary tells him that she fulfilled her promise,
To find someone better and an Adonis,
For it was the plea of the man to her,
Before he set out to war on a spur.
