Love Poem: Overwhelming

Overwhelming

Daylight fell into twilight,
   twilight fell into the night
to leave me on a painfilled cobbled road
where I stumbled into the murky dark
   confused, disoriented
feeling the gushing waves of upheaval
throbbing in my chest
where my heart was once full
and is now an empty vessel
   submerged by pain
suffocating in a cavernous sea of sadness

I begin to wander in circles
as the road grows smaller
and the stars drip from the sky
one after another like mournful raindrops
that splatter at my feet
leaving a pool where nothing lives

I'm alone, cold in a desolate space
where all that was drifts by
my lungs fill with the black smoke of yesterday's ashes
I try to hold back the rising tsunami
that is welling in my eyes
where the only sound I hear
   is my heart crying
