Love Poem: Out There

Out There

He’s never put his arms around her.
He does not speak her name.
He’s not aware that she exists:
that two hearts beat the same.

She knows he’s somewhere out there,
for she’s seen him in her dreams.
Always at a distance though:
never close enough it seems.

For she can never touch him:
never see him sharp and clear.
Or have him speak the words to her,
she longs so much to hear.

Now time has swiftly passed on by
and with each fleeting year;
the yearning for this man she's loved
turns longing into fear.

Her golden hair now silvery grey:
deep furrows line her face.
Time refused to be her friend,
in such a desperate race.

Now as she nears the end of life
and it's finally grown too late:
she thinks about this man she loved
then wonders of his fate?

Has he known of something missing
in the lifetime he has lived?
Has he reached for love a time or two:
found nothing there to give?

Does he sometimes wonder of her,
though her face won’t come to mind?
Did he travel ever far and wide
while hoping he would find:

A love that filled him up with hope:
that cast out fear and pain,
A love that sealed an empty heart:
then filled it up again?

Perhaps there is a place for them
Beyond this time, someway.
But here and now can never be;
They have used up each today.

Their lives are nearly over now
And time was not their friend.
The moment's closing in on them,
When each sad song must end.

And end it will, but at the last,
We must hope that love defies:
Time and place; the void of space:
Love unfulfilled . . survives.
