Love Poem: Once Upon a Summer

Once Upon a Summer

Why is it that she hadn't wed?
Our dear aunt told her story,
Speaking gently so we wouldn't cry
And needn't be too sorry.
"I've had a lovely, full life
And all of you my dears.
This happened very long ago,
So please don't waste your tears.

Going, gone our summer,
Once welcomed in with glee.
So many solemn promises
That were not meant to be.
Loving vows unspoken,
Summer slipped slowly by,
Taking all the lovely dreams
Dishonored by a lie.

A treasured, lacy, wedding dress
Sentenced never to be worn
As was the ring he'd promised
With my finger to adorn.
A lie and then another
Had torn my world apart.
We said goodbye to summer,
The one that broke my heart."
