Once There Was a Love

Together they sat by the side of a jumping cataract Watching the sunlight dancing through the smoky vapour With every droplet mirroring a spectrum of shades Dreamt of a time when they would be man n’ wife Never knowing one would vanish out from the sky like a rainbow. He was a candle that glowed luminous Emitting undeniable light of love and warmth Who shone on her like the light of a harvest moon A pillar, she thought, she could twine round Like a creeping vine on a trellis Now, as she sees the homing bird coming to join its mate And listens to the notes of a nightingale from the deserted wood She thinks of him and slips into an abyss of agony and longing With waves of commotion swirling in her head And sees her sky suddenly turning stygian black When the setting sun in its twilight glows When the waning day’s last glorious rays enclose She seeks him in the hovering silence and seclusion of life And wonder if love adrift and lost in the air Would return once more to alight in her shattered heart....!
