Love Poem: O Love

O Love

On the lush green banks ‘neath the swaying trees,
Fair nymphs used to dance in the gentle breeze
While the Muses sang, and pink blossoms blew,
And while the bees sipped the sweet flowers’ dew.

Where the lark’s clear call was heard from the coves,
Hark! Now silence fills these forsaken groves!
When thou smiled the skies brightened and birds sang,
The winds whispered and the fairest flow’rs sprang.

Alas! Hush’d are the birds and still are the trees,
How the sun hath dimmed, how the time doth freeze!
How the heav’ns cry, how the flowers wither,
O love! O love! When will thou come hither?

‘Tis cold and lifeless when thou art away,
But when with thee, ‘tis summer’s finest day.
