O, Lord, How Much I Do Need You

Divide life in half; split it in two;
You'll probably see life the same way I do:
In the first part we flee from the One Above,
Stealing back later, to reclaim His Bounty of Love.
In our youth, full of vigor, we run, skip, and jump,
Twist and shout, play about, heedless of warning.
Then we age, settle in, think and consider,
Pause and reflect on His Blessings, each and every morning.

Once I scoffed, wrote You off--'didn't need You.'
Bragged to friends, 'God is Dead'--'didn't believe You.'
Drank too much, ran around, had affairs every week,
Scored cigarettes, marijuana, illicit drugs at my peak:
Now I know just how much, Lord, I do need You,
Past, Present, Future--Wherever Life Bleeds Through.
