Love Poem: Nubbs

Nubbs

Pets come and go in our years,
And when they have to depart
It brings so many tears
And rips out your heart,
Because from time to time
There's that "special one";
Your "partner in crime",
Who brings you so much fun.

Some don't understand or care
How a pet can mean so much,
But they are always there,
Asking in return a simple touch.
I had such a friend not so long ago,
But he was taken away,
Causing me to miss him so,
And think of him every day.

My feline furry little pal
I've watched grow since he was a kitten,
I'll always remember that "meow"
And his funny way of sittin'.
I fell in love with this creature
At the very first glance.
I adored every feature,
So my heart took a chance.

He was black and white
With piercing green eyes.
He was so very bright
And just the perfect size.
He then hurt his tail
Almost right away.
He was just a little frail,
But he was "ay-okay".

He escaped that time,
Leaving eight lives to spare.
He was going to be just fine,
Only leaving a "bob-tail" there.
That's how he got his name,
"Nubbs" seemed to fit just right.
When called, in he came,
Even though he loved it outside.

He brought me his "catches of the day",
Dropping them at the front door.
Mice, birds and even snakes,
As if he'd accomplished a chore.
I still expect to see him at the door,
Or to jump out and attack my feet,
But he's not here anymore,
Hoping someday we'll again meet.

Yes, he was a character indeed,
There will never be another "Nubbs".
It's still so hard to believe
That his tummy I will no longer rub.
He deserved more than four short years,
But at least his pain is gone.
My voice, I hope he sill hears,
Sending my love, keeping our bond.

I couldn't have asked for a better pet,
He was the very very best.
So special, I will never forget,
Knowing he's at peace, so I may rest.
