Love Poem: New Year

New Year

Our once solitary pursuits led to a displaced youth,
Escaping mundanity for precious new hands,
Sucking face behind a homespun kissing booth,

Entangled teenagers love only with consume,
Candlelit dinners, made for such grand declarations,
Vestiges of stale cigarettes and cheap perfume.

I would refuse to let this sweet song conclude,
However, my horse and carriage must soon depart,
Rendering the fleeting melody of hearts subdued.

I pressed the primrose you pinched for me,
Scrawled our names and dates in books,
Preserved verses of your favourite poetry.

The night chimes twelve, an unwanted new year,
Celebrations of strangers fade from embrace,
Us, the only two, remain dancing here.
