Love Poem: My Secret Admirer

My Secret Admirer

There he stood underneath a spindle tree,
Plucking sweet berries
And singing our love song
While wild beech-leaves round and round him spread.
Turned he and caught my gaze
A little coy i ran home into my little house,
Pulled to the shutters, barred up the door;
I knelt down to light up the candle
I could view dark shadows emerging closer upon the floor.
Long-legged shadows
Forcefully leaping up unpainted walls, falling, and again.
I could hear the east Wind pushing at the gate,
I won't open, not for wind or rain.
Oh, run home, little ones, lest the whirling leaves
Take ye far away, to the land of fairies
Lighting up my room
Straightened I my neck to see through the window
I could see the spindle tree dancing
Suddenly the lights went off
And turning back
Standing face to face with me was the only man I had often
wanted and dreamt of
Closer he came and slowly I melted away
