My Kryptonite

It leaves a disgusting stink behind With angry thoughts And dark lies It seems to dread the hope of light With its gentle reprieve From shame and grief It shrinks away from joy and laughter With hesitation and fear Reflecting disillusionment It is cynicism and depression With only the promise of sorrow Coloring the heart in horror It is anxious thoughts and worry With noisy screams of longing Bringing nightmares, trembling It is a hard, black trepidation Living in the shadows Of anger and despair It is like a snake, sliding slowly Across the heart who hopes Rousing the enemy of loss It is hopelessness and doom Darkness that pounds like thunder Inside the mind, the perfect soil… For planting its anger and resentment Bitterness that knows no contentment It is hatred – it is darkness Living in the shadows of a fear Coloring the soul blackest misery Never aware that it is the kryptonite Of every kindness or warmth This hatred is the gloomy fate Of a heart who refuses compassion And embraces the way of revulsion Hate is my kryptonite And love is my power In the end, I believe Love defeats this foe Eternally bringing victory Hope, faith and love That are forever friends To those who know them Believe in their power And give without expectations The gift of love without conditions… True love brings true wisdom Kryptonite Poetry Contest Sponsored by: Anthony Biaanco September 20, 2021
