My Forever After But Not Yours

We were in love in an intense way for such a short time
I thought it was forever, which shows you how naïve I am
For listening and believing, and trusting a handsome devil – you.
I knew there would never be another man I could love this much.
I gave you everything I had, was, and thought of being.
I was your forever-after, you were my prince charming.

When you began tearing up the diary of our existence
With your betrayals, each sneakier than the other,
I wanted to give you sixty-seven million more chances
And I did. I gave you an implausible amount of opportunities to fix us.
But I guess you were busy writing songs about your new love
While I was writing love stories about you.

I have photos, journal entries, stories and songs
To prove we had once-upon-a-brownstone been in love
Anyway, to prove I had been knocked off my feet by you,
You were so amazing and wonderful, I plan to keep part of that.
It is incredibly difficult to believe you ever were
even the teensiest in love with me
When I see tiny bits of our photos lying in the ditch outside our house
And your new woman wearing my favorite hand-painted denim jacket.
