Music To My Ears
We've shared a bed for so many happy years
I've gotten accustomed to you sleeping by my side,
and as a couple, we've experienced both smiles and tears.
I have spent most of my life tethered to your heart
and I've found peace of mind lying close to you,
for in all those years, we've never been apart.
The best part of every day is cuddling with you at night,
but there are times when your breathing is so shallow
I fear you've died...and it gives me a fright.
I reach over to ever so gently shake you
and when you react, I feel so relieved
that my nightmare has not come true.
Love has kept us together for nearly fifty years
and every night before I sleep, I listen for your snore,
for that reassuring guttural sound...is music to my ears.
