Make a Sad Song Better

“Make a Sad Song Better”?
It sounds good at first glance but then who do you serve? To solve other folks ‘problems’ suggests more than nerve! Do you dream that your wisdom groks nightmares afar, Your discernments shed light (or trap fireflies in jars?) Still, I’ve been where you are, and it’s hard to resist! True, your friends are more popular, frequently kissed! Your ‘perspectives’ have value for sweet bye and byes? To control love’s insane; art is born when love cries! Don’t think tears mean love ends (the best love stands its ground!) Friend, to ‘listen’ suffices when echoes confound. It’s the effort to stay (more than staying) that counts! Does integrity claim love must balance accounts? If I sing a sad song, can that not be my choice? All emotions are equal, a gift of one voice That I share with my loved ones, that says where I am! Does this ask for assistance, suggest there’s a jam! Let the ‘Sad Song’ I ‘work on’ be one that I sing With more intimate knowledge! I’m bound by a ‘ring’ Through my nose, on my finger, or free to forsake What no fool would commit to (if I want a break?) Should a ‘Song’ tempt my whistle, that's one I might wed. Love’s wide-ranging emotions (not sweetness whose bed Seems to promise nirvana!) How boring is that? Hear night’s poetry wail (on steel track) a fenced cat! Brian Johnston 25th of September in 2019
