Love and Waiting

Her heart was preoccupied.
Many men came knocking.
Looking for a home.
Looking for refuge,
not knowing she was the storm.

She gave them grace
and a smile,
but no love.
She could not give away that which was not hers to give.

Her heart had belonged to another.

He was a cruel and fickle owner.
Desiring love without attachment,
asking her to do the impossible.
He filled her heart with confusion.
With love and loss.

His face
still the face she wished she could see when others came to court.
Her heart
filled with disappointment as she continued to wait.

The waiting became her way of life;
a measurement of time.
Each second,
minute,
and hour without him an obstacle to overcome.
Moments that stood in the way of her reconnection with love and living.

Drifting through time,
she feigned a life.
Collecting people and places
only to serve as a placeholder for that which she truly desired.

His occupation and promise to stay.
